Our travels took us to Tupelo, Mississippi where we saw the birthplace of the King of Rock-N-Roll, Elvis Presley. I’m not a huge fan, but my parents were pretty excited to check it out. And, as it turns out, the history was really interesting!
Elvis’ father built the house where it stands today for $180 which he borrowed. A few years later he lost the house when we was sent to prison for forgery. He sold a hog for $4 but added a zero to the check before cashing it. The $36 difference landed him in prison for 8 months and his wife and son were displaced from their home.
The church where Elvis and his family went was moved from it’s original location in town to the museum property. It’s also now part of the museum. This is where Elvis developed his love and talent for gospel music.
Elvis and his parents relocated to Memphis, TN when he was 13 years old. He purchased the property known as Graceland after he became successful. We didn’t visit Graceland, but maybe another day we’ll check it out!
