Even the best plan sometimes need to be changed. That’s what happened to us last August when we set out to hike South Kinsman and North Kinsman, two of NH’s 4000 foot peaks.

It was early, really early when we rolled into the parking lot at the Lonesome Lake trailhead. There was a Ranger at the trailhead asking people about their hiking plans and alerting them that the weather was cold and rainy near the summits. We had checked the weather when we left home, so we knew we’d likely alter our plans. After talking to the Ranger we decided to go with an alternate plan.

Instead of attempting the summits, we decided to do the 3.1 mile hike to the Lonesome Lake Hut. The hut is managed by the Appalachian Mountain Club and was recently updated. The girls were disappointed with the plan change, but it was still a really beautiful hike. We were thankful we’d packed the rain gear, and that the hut was open for hot cocoa!

It rained on and off during the hike, but it wasn’t too bad. The girls enjoyed seeing ducks at Lonesome Lake. My favorite part of the hike was the boardwalk around the lake. You really can’t go wrong exploring a lake nestled in the mountains!
