I always wondered what the story was behind the submarine tucked just off the coast of Portsmouth, NH. I must have driven by it at least two dozen times until finally we went in for a tour – it was in February 2020, just before the world shut down due to Covid.

If you don’t mind small spaces, The USS Albacore is an interesting historic tour. According to the website, the submarine was “Used for testing control and propulsion systems, sonar equipment, dive brakes, escape mechanisms, and various innovative theories and equipment, Albacore was truly a unique Navy floating laboratory.”

The girls enjoyed checking out the old instruments, maps and wandering around the submarine interior. We couldn’t believe how tight the sleeping quarters were! It took us just under and hour and a half to tour the entire submarine and read all of the plaques. If you’re in the area and looking for something to do, it’s worth stopping by to check it out.
